One of the great things about living in an apartment is that if something in your home gets damaged or destroyed, much of the time management will be able to cover it. However, in a real-life survival situation, the apartment’s office will more than likely be closed, meaning that you will have to take matters into your own hands. This is why it’s important to know what items you should have in your apartment at all times in case SHTF.
Recently, the website ApartmentPrepper.com published a list of ten must have emergency items for apartment dwellers. These items are as follows:
1) Swiss Army Knife
Regardless of whether or not you find yourself in a survival situation, if you need something fixed, chances are a Swiss Army Knife will be able to assist you in some capacity. In addition to keeping one in your apartment, it’s also a good idea to attach one to your keys and carry it with you on the go. You never know when you’ll need to use it.
2) Can Opener
It’s a good idea to keep not just one but a couple of high quality can openers in your apartment, considering the fact that canned food is pretty difficult to eat without one.
3) Multi-Tool
If you have a multi-tool that consists of a screwdriver, pliers and knives, then chances are you won’t come across many situations where you can’t fix or repair something in your apartment unit. Like the Swiss Army Knife, a multi-tool is a good thing to have regardless of whether or not you’re in a survival situation.
4) Duct Tape
They say that you can fix anything with duct tape, and quite honestly, there’s a lot of truth to that statement. From packing up boxes to repairing tears, even sealing up windows or cracks in the ceiling, duct tape is a must-have for preppers.
5) Water Filter
Water can potentially become contaminated at any time, but it becomes even more likely if you are in a SHTF situation. Having a water filter is essential so that you can continue drinking clean water and stay hydrated. As reported by Natural News, one of the best water filters currently on the market is the AquTru water filter, which has the ability to filter out almost everything with near-100 percent effectiveness.
6) Flashlight
Not only should you have a couple of flashlights in your apartment, but you should try to get in the habit of keeping one on your bedside table within reach. You never know when the lights will go out and you find yourself surrounded by darkness.
7) USB Flash drive
Given the fact that your computer likely won’t work anymore after SHTF, you’re going to need something to store your important files and documents on. Flash drives are capable of storing a lot of information, and they’re also easy to take with you on the go.
8) Weather Radio
If the power goes out, then you’ll still need a way to know whats going on outside. Having a weather radio inside your apartment can stay you informed at all times, even if SHTF. (Related: Here are five survival radios that can keep you connected when SHTF.)
9) Solar Charger
No power means that you’ll have no way to charge your cellphone and other small appliances… unless, of course, you happen to have a solar charger. Keep one of these in your apartment and you’ll never have to worry about your appliances shutting down in a survival situation.
10) Screwdriver Set
From assembling furniture to fixing doors and cabinets, a screwdriver set will come in handy more often than you think. Even if you aren’t prepping for SHTF, it’s a good idea to get your hands on one so that you don’t have to wait for maintenance to arrive just for minor adjustments.
