If you bring a firearm with you almost everywhere you go for self-defense, there’s a good chance that you will need some extra ammunition for it.
Strictly speaking, while it’s not that necessary to carry more than one magazine’s worth of ammunition, it’s always a good idea to be better prepared, with some preppers even saying that there’s no such thing as too much ammo.
Having extra ammo can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re in a shootout against a dangerous and heavily armed opponent.
When it comes to reloading, however, the best way to reload your magazine when carrying your firearm is if you have a purpose-designed carrier. Whether you’re reloading a magazine, a speed strip or a speedloader, having the proper carrier for your ammunition makes all the difference. Here are five different purpose-built carriers that you should consider. (h/t to SurvivalSullivan.com)
The Raven Concealment Systems (RCS) Pocket Shield isn’t necessarily a carrier for ammunition. Instead, it helps maximize the amount of space you have for concealed carry. As its name suggests, it acts as a protective layer between your clothing and the items in the Pocket Shield. This prevents your ammunition from imprinting on your clothing, giving away the fact that you’re carrying a firearm.
The RCS Pocket Shield also allows items with clips – like magazine pouches – to be secured safely to it, keeping them in place in case you need quick access to your items. Other items with clips, such as pens and phone cases, can also be attached to it.
If your primary handgun is a revolver, then you should be familiar with speedloaders. These are handy little instruments that hold five or six rounds of revolver ammunition. Using them shaves several crucial seconds off of your reload time. However, they aren’t always easy to carry around with you. If you own a revolver, you may need a pouch to carry your speedloaders.
That’s what Safariland’s 371 (Split Six) Speedloader pouch is for. It’s a leather unit that can hold one speedloader up above and directly over the belt. This allows the speedloader and the ammo it carries to straddle your belt, effectively concealing it within your clothing. Appendix Inside the Waistband (AIWB) carry involves carrying your concealed firearm on the inside of your pants’ waistband, usually on the right side and over the appendix, as the name of the carry style implies. Dark Star Gear’s (DSG) Koala AIWB Pouch is perfect for this style of concealed carry. Furthermore, what makes DSG’s Koala AIWB pouch even better is that it has an adjustable ride height. A long line of closely-spaced holes on the side of the pouch can give you better precision when it comes to how high or how low on your waist you want your ammo pouch to be, maximizing comfort while retaining concealment and speed of draw.
The Front Pocket Innovations NeoMag is a thin, skeletonized pocket clip with a magnetic metal band that you can attach your magazine to, allowing you to simply carry an extra magazine in the front pocket of your pants. Its strong magnet, which is made of a rare-earth material, is designed to lock onto the bottom third portion of your magazine on three sides. All people will see on the outside of your pocket is an unassuming clip. The NeoMag allows you to carry as many extra magazines as your front pockets will allow. It’ll also be a thousand times safer to use the Neomag than to just drop a magazine into your pocket.
The RCS Copia magazine pouch is the opposite of an AIWB pouch, as it is carried outside the waistband (OWB). If you carry a handgun on-body, the RCS Copia magazine pouch can provide you with two extra magazines. The Copia’s two magazine pouches hug the body, making it easy to conceal under your shirt. Better yet, if you expect to engage in physically demanding activities such as running, crouching, crawling or jumping either into or away from danger, the Copia’s snug design makes having it an advantage. You can rest assured that your magazines will stay in place even if you’re chasing after a pickpocket or running from a gang.
If you decide that you need to bring more ammo for your everyday carry gun, make sure that whatever gadget you use to bring your ammo integrates well with the rest of your setup. Otherwise, you may give away the fact that you’re carrying a firearm to anybody.
