Both non-preppers and preppers often rely on various electronic devices. But there is a potential threat that could render all devices useless in an instant: an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).
Before SHTF, learn how to EMP-proof electronics and start a prepping stockpile for your family.
Below are some tips on how you can protect electronics from an EMP. (h/t to AlphaSurvivalist.net)
An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is “a burst of electromagnetic radiation that can potentially damage and destroy electronic devices.”
EMPs can be caused by several sources, such as a nuclear explosion, a geomagnetic storm or a solar flare.
EMPs are created when a sudden and intense burst of energy is released. This energy then triggers a rapid change in the electromagnetic field. (Related: EMP-proofing MYTHS preppers need to know about.)
EMP events can destroy electronic devices. The high voltage surge induced by the electromagnetic field can make electronic devices malfunction or even shut down.
This can then cause issues like data loss or communication breakdowns.
Protect devices against EMPs by using materials that can absorb or deflect the magnetic fields created by the radiation. Conductive materials like aluminum foil, mesh and steel are effective at absorbing and deflecting magnetic fields.
Here are some DIY techniques to EMP-proof electronics:
Build a Faraday cage
A Faraday cage is a container made of conductive material that can protect big or small electronics from an EMP.
Build a Faraday cage using common household items such as aluminum foil, a metal box or tin foil. Wrap your devices in foil and place them inside the metal box.
Make sure the box is tightly sealed to prevent any gaps where an EMP could penetrate.
Use common household items
If you don’t have a metal box or tin foil, you can use other household items to protect your electronics from an EMP.
Try using a garbage can lined with cardboard and aluminum foil. Place the gadgets inside the can and seal the lid tightly.
Alternatively, you can use your oven as a makeshift Faraday cage. Keep in mind that not all ovens are effective at blocking EMPs, so do your research and test the device before relying on it for protection.
Commercial EMP products
There are also some commercial solutions that you can try, such as EMP shielding products. These items are meant to protect electronics from the harmful effects of an EMP.
Your options include surge protectors, Faraday bags or EMP-proof enclosures.
Surge protectors are affordable and can help protect electronics from power surges caused by an EMP. They divert excess voltage away from devices to prevent damage from power spikes.
Faraday bags are made from conductive materials that block electromagnetic radiation. Place your devices inside the bag to protect them from the effects of an EMP.
Faraday boxes or EMP-proof enclosures are some of the best options available. These enclosures are meant to completely block all electromagnetic radiation and provide the ultimate protection for electronics.
