Whether you have sensitive skin or are taking care of young children at home, it’s a good option to use bug repellents made with natural ingredients such as essential oils.
You can also keep your home free from various pests using a DEET-free bug spray made with non-toxic ingredients like cedar oil.
As a bonus, natural products like DIY bug repellents and bug sprays are environmentally friendly because they don’t contain harmful synthetic chemicals and pesticides. (h/t to Healthline.com)
While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires most skin-applied insect repellants to be registered for both human safety and effectiveness, the agency has also categorized some natural ingredients as minimum-risk pesticides. Keep in mind that while these ingredients are safe for human use, the EPA does not evaluate them for effectiveness.
If you are a prepper, here are some natural ingredients that you can use to make DIY bug sprays or repellents for your home and yard:
Citrus oils
Citronella and citrus oils like limonene are some of the more popular insect repellents.
According to studies, citronella helps repel mosquitoes and it can also be effective against aphids, fleas, flies and mites. (Related: Here’s why Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil deserves a spot in your survival cache.)
Garlic oil
Research suggests that garlic oil may help with repelling ticks.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), garlic oil is a natural tick repellent that is safe for use in yards and gardens.
Lavender essential oil
Aside from being helpful for relaxation and sleep, lavender essential oil can also help repel mosquitoes.
Unlike other essential oils, lavender is usually considered safe for topical use without diluting it.
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
A 2016 review has suggested that the oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) is an effective natural mosquito repellent.
The CDC has also suggested that products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective against mosquitoes.
Don’t confuse oil of lemon eucalyptus with lemon eucalyptus essential oil because the latter isn’t effective at repelling mosquitoes.
Thyme essential oil
A 2005 study suggested that thyme essential oil can help repel mosquitoes.
Note that thyme oil isn’t considered safe for use on your skin, so always dilute it in your carrier oil of choice.
Remember that not all essential oils are safe for topical use. If you’re planning to use essential oils on your skin, it’s best to dilute them with a carrier oil.
When making a bug spray recipe that’s safe on your skin, always use essential oils that are safe and effective for topical application.
